In this Hindi movie, a rich man from Agra faces death because of his pre-planned wedding. As a result, he becomes a slave to a Brahmin who was looking for someone to do manual labor for him.The Agra man is then subjected before Guru Maharaj Ji and asked what his action will be in response. The mantra that he utters is too much to bear by the Brahmin as it implies that anyone can become anything as long as they believe in themselves. In order to save himself from the face of death, the Agra man steals all of the businessman's money and runs away with his wife. After the Agra man has saved himself, he gets to know that the money he stole was actually illegal funds. He then returns all of the stolen money in order to save himself.Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola is based on a true story of two friends in Indian Punjab, in which one becomes a business tycoon in Chandigarh and the other will be leading an honest life in Haryana, like his father. The movie tells us that how even poor honest people can become successful in their own ways if they believe themselves and work hard for it.

It was awarded Best story and Best direction at the 3rd South Indian International Movie Awards held in Chennai on 23 November 2005.The film won a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment category. It also won a Special Jury Award at the 25th Punjabi Film Festival held in Ujjain on 30 November 2005. The film was premiered at the London Film Festival 2005.Awards

The movie received positive reviews. It has a fresh rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received 3/5 stars from Critics. Subhash K Jha gave a positive review, saying "This is a film with a message, and it makes its point without being preachy or pedantic. A must for lovers of Hindi cinema." Taran Adarsh gave the movie 4/5 stars and said that "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is significant because it marks the debut of three artists who have come together for this offbeat comedy drama with extreme individuality and passion. The result is this unique film that's bound to create ripples in the Hindi film industry." The film was successful at the box office, collecting Rs. 8.32 crore in its first weekend.
